4 Tips for Protecting Your Knees During Physical Activity

Sometimes it feels like a challenge to stay active and remain cautious about our orthopedic health at the same time. Everyone worries about their orthopedic health–especially those who make physical activity a top priority. Whether you’re a runner, a dancer, a cyclist, or participate in some other type of sport, there are measures you can take to make sure your knees are in top working order.

1. Warm Up First

Let your body know you’re about to engage in physical activity by warming yourself up before a workout. Your knees will be able to gradually prepare themselves for more strenuous activity, and they’ll be thanking you for it later.

A warm up should be intense enough to raise your body temperature and get your blood pumping, but not as challenging as your actual workout. Plus, along with helping your feet and knees adjust to increased physical activity, there are many other benefits to warming up before you exercise.

2. Choose Low-Impact Exercise Activities

Should you really be running, lifting weights, or playing tennis? Be careful how you choose to exercise–some activities might be putting unnecessary stress on your knees.

Instead, try low-impact exercises like running on an elliptical, using a stationary bike, or swimming. You can even ask your doctor whether or not you should be performing a certain type of exercise.

3. Wear the Right Shoes

No matter what type of exercise you choose, you need to make sure you’re wearing the right shoes for it. Different types of physical activity call for different types of shoes, especially for high-impact sports that warrant more cushioning.

Don’t sweat picking out the right shoe–there’s plenty of information online for people looking for shoes to help protect their knees.

If you’re suffering knee pain or just want to go the extra mile to protect your knees, it’s always better to err on the side of more cushioning with your shoes.

4. Target Your Knees During Exercise

The best way to protect your knees is to make preventative exercise your priority. Certain exercises can prevent knee problems later on down the road or even ease existing knee pain.

Remember to listen to your body and take time off to heal. Pushing through pain won’t keep your knees healthy for the long haul. Giving them a workout through low-impact physical activity will, so keep these tips in mind and treat your knees with kindness you’ll be able to count on them for years to come.
